"HANGINGS" The Lincoln Assassination Conspirators: In May 1865, eight civilians were tried by a military commission for "traitorously" conspiring to assassinate President Lincoln. However, this trial and the subsequent executions occurred after Lincoln's death. His successor, President Andrew Johnson, signed the executive order confirming the convictions. Of those eight, four were executed by hanging on July 7, 1865, namely, "Lewis Payne", "David Harold", "J.W. Atzerott" and "Mary Surratt".
