A 17-year-old is facing a murder charge after San Antonio police say a dispute over a 99-cent tobacco product turned deadly at a Northwest Side convenience store.
Officers were called around 1 a.m. Friday to the Classic Mart & 420 Shop in the 4000 block of Medical Drive after reports of gunfire. When officers arrived, they found 25-year-old employee Sanad Faisal Al Resheq suffering from multiple stab wounds. Investigators later determined no shots had been fired.
According to an arrest affidavit, surveillance video showed Samuel Davis becoming involved in an altercation with Al Resheq after the clerk refused to sell him a tobacco product because he was not old enough. Police say Davis pulled out a knife and stabbed Al Resheq multiple times before fleeing.
Al Resheq died at the scene.
Investigators identified Davis through surveillance footage, witness statements and a photo lineup. A coworker told police Davis was a regular customer who frequently caused problems at the store and had previously been known to steal.
Hours later, officers arrested Davis following a standoff connected to the investigation at the Charles Andrews Apartments. He was booked into jail on a murder charge with bond set at $500,000.
The killing left friends, customers and family members grieving outside the store Friday. A handwritten sign posted on the locked front door announced the business would remain closed and that a vigil would be held at 10 p.m. in honor of the slain employee.
Teena-Louise Moyer, who came to offer support to the victim's family, described the store workers as welcoming members of the community.
"They are the American dream really," Moyer said. "He's a baby. He hasn't even lived."
Another customer, St. Clair Greenidge, said he often spent time talking with Al Resheq after moving to San Antonio.
"To lose his life for doing his job? Tragic," Greenidge said. "It's sad. Very, very sad."
The Islamic Center of San Antonio also expressed condolences, calling Al Resheq's death a tragic loss that has left deep grief among family, friends and those who knew him.
