NEW
ORLEANS — The defense is getting its turn in the corruption trial of former New
Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin.

The
prosecution has rested and, with the trial set to resume Thursday, defense
lawyers are faced with countering five days of testimony from more than two
dozen witnesses, including five who said they were involved in bribing Nagin.

Defense
lawyer Robert Jenkins has tried to attack the credibility of witnesses
testifying under plea agreements. And, while cross examining prosecution
witnesses, he has stressed that there's no direct proof indicating Nagin traded
benefits for money or services.

Nagin was mayor from 2002 until 2010, including the tumultuous period during
and after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He was indicted after leaving office.
