NEW ORLEANS POLICE DEPARTMENT is full of DU DU in 2014

NOPD produces film to end crime by kids!

NEW ORLEANS —Despite the 20 percent drop in homicide investigations in 2013, crime among youth continued to make a big impact in the city.

 ---The NAAWP interjects a “BULL$HYT”---

Thirteen homicide victims in Orleans Parish were 17 years old or younger and more teens were killed as a result of gang violence, with 10 deaths being attributed to gang member gunfire.
The statistics prompted a new approach from those trying to reduce crime in the city.
Tuesday, members of the New Orleans Police Department urged kids to think before they act by allowing kids to watch a new documentary.
The eight-minute film depicts life behind bars.
A group of students at Banneker Elementary School on Burdette Street in Uptown heard from two inmates -- both from New Orleans.
One of them is serving 40 years to life at Angola for manslaughter. The other inmate is serving eight years at Avoyelles Correctional Facility for armed robberies he committed when he was 15 years old -- nearly the same age as the students who watched the film.
NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas said the film is targeted toward middle school students in the Orleans Parish School System.
Serpas expects it to reach kids and be effective in two ways.
"One is bring into the minds of children the consequences of their decisions when they make a decision to do something -- what could be the consequences of helping them to be better able to make those choices and decisions. And the second is to get our cops back in the classroom,” Serpas said.
The film captured the attention of the students and at the end they shared their feelings about the film.
Serpas said resource officers will use the film as a conversation starter in schools in the spring and into next year.
New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is also in the film, urging students to make good choices.
The NOPD said the idea for the project came last summer when two teens were arrested on charges of armed robberies.
The Department raised $50,000 and hired a local film crew to produce the film.
