A white landlord was killed and his body burned in his SUV. The suspects are two black males, who are the victim’s tenants. The killing took place in majority black Orangeburg County.
Two brothers have been arrested and charged in the slaying of a man who was discovered shot to death in a burning SUV last week in Santee.
Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell announced the arrests of Jason Glover, 23, and Leroy Glover, Jr., 25, during a news conference at department headquarters Monday afternoon.
Ravenell said Leroy Glover was renting a mobile home in Orangeburg from the victim, 61-year-old Richard Michael Carter of Orangeburg.
The sheriff said Leroy Glover intentionally set fire to that mobile home on Monday around 6 p.m.
Jason Glover has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Leroy Glover faces a third degree arson charge, in addition to murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
“Mr. Carter was a husband, son, brother, and a father,” said Ravenell. “His life had a meaning to those that loved him. Mr. Carter was the victim of cowards and thugs who had no moral or ethical issue with taking someone’s life.”
Carter was reported missing by his wife at 1:35 a.m. on September 24. Wendy Carter said her husband had not returned home after going out ‘to collect rent money from some tenants.’ When it got late and she had been unable to reach him by phone, she called the sheriff’s department.
On September 23, just hours before that report was filed, the Santee Fire Department contacted the sheriff’s department around 7:30 p.m. after firefighters discovered a body inside Carter’s 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser during their investigation of a vehicle fire in a wooded area on Antioch Road near Wactor Road.
Fire Chief Edward Barnett said he discovered a deceased man lying face up in the back seat of the SUV. The SUV, according to an incident report, “had plowed through a metal gate that was blocking unauthorized entry onto the property.”
The coroner’s office later said the man died from a gunshot wound.
