School is a supposed to be a safe haven, but Tuesday moms were picking up their little ones early after their classmate, a 4-year-old boy, brought $173 and eight bags of cocaine to school and caused some students to be evacuated from their class.
"I'm shocked that a kid was able to bring drugs to school, but it's not really surprising with the drug epidemic in the city," concerned parent Jennifer Gallagher said.
"We were concerned," Chief Inspector Cynthia Dorsey said. "We were scared to death when we heard, you know, a pre-K child."
Police said around 10 a.m., the 4-year-old was showing off his cash.
"They told the teacher, and then the child reached into his pocket, pulled out a quantity of narcotics," Dorsey said.
Police dogs sniffed around for more drugs, but nothing else was found.
Police took the 4-year-old to St. Christopher's Hospital. School district officials said the boy is a victim, and are glad to hear he is safe.
"If a child were to digest something like that drugs, so it's very concerning," Chief of Communications Fernando Gallard said.
Parents and the community are waiting to hear who gave the cash and drugs to the little boy.
"We can't charge a 4-year-old, but of course, if the investigation proves we can find out if there are narcotics and we can find out who's in possession of them," Dorsey said.
After the little boy flashed the cash and drugs in school, a classmate alerted the teacher.
