The District
Attorney of Orleans Parish has joined Mayor Mitch Landrieu in calling on the
Governor to authorize the deployment of state troopers to New Orleans on a
"more permanent" basis.

Leon
Cannizzaro told FOX 8 Wednesday morning, "Let's be honest, the city of New
Orleans right now is being overtaken by urban terrorists."

"When the
state police are in the city we see that they make more arrests and we see the
incidents of violent crime are down, especially in the French Quarter."

The DA says a
short-staffed NOPD doesn't have the manpower needed to tackle the crime problem.

"It's not
that the police are not capable - there are not enough New Orleans police
officers on the street right now to do the job that needs to be done."

Cannizzaro
says the city is in "a crisis mode" and it would be in the state's
economic interest to dispatch troopers to New Orleans.

"This is
the major economic hub for the state of Louisiana. If we do things to
scare the tourists away then we hurt this community and ultimately the state of
Louisiana."

Cannizzaro
added, "The Governor is the top law enforcement official in this state, he
is the only one that can order this assist and we need it very badly."
