A young BLACK SAVAGE who participated in a mob attack on a Detroit-area WHITE motorist needed a father to "beat the hell" out of him as a kid to discourage him from committing such a crime, a judge said Thursday.
The stunning remarks by Wayne County Judge James Callahan came as he sentenced Latrez Cummings to six months in jail.
In response to the judge's question, BLACK SAVAGE Latrez Cummings, 19, said his BLACK SAVAGE father wasn't around when he was growing up.
Callahan said Cummings needed a dad, "someone to discipline you. Someone to beat the hell out of you when you made a mistake, as opposed to allowing you or encouraging you to do it to somebody else."
BLACK SAVAGE Cummings and four others have pleaded guilty to assaulting totally innocent WHITE Steve Utash, who was in a coma for days after the April attack. The BLACK SAVAGE mob pounced on him in Detroit after he got out of his pickup truck to help a 10-year-old who had stepped in front of his vehicle.
The judge's comments preceded a loud, spirited exchange with assistant prosecutor Lisa Lindsay, who said the six-month sentence was too light. She said there are many young BLACK SAVAGES who were raised without a father but haven't commited crimes.
"Did I ever use the term 'black'?" replied Callahan, who is white. "It doesn't matter if a person is black, white, yellow or red."
BLACK SAVAGE Cummings was the last BLACK SAVAGE defendant to be sentenced in the case. The longest sentence was nearly 6 ½ years in prison for a BLACK SAVAGE whose punishment was enhanced because of his criminal record.
The judge was aggressive throughout the hearing. He ordered the well-dressed BLACK SAVAGE Cummings to take his hand out of his pocket and accused him of lying a week ago about his school attendance.
Callahan, citing records, said BLACK SAVAGE Cummings hadn't attended classes since December.
"Tell me what the heck you did with your time," he said.
Despite the harsh tone, the judge said BLACK SAVAGE Cummings' age and childhood were mitigating factors in the light sentence.
"We've all been 19 years of age," Callahan said.

In shooting of toddler and teens, police say more than 12 rounds fired into crowd
The two men accused of wounding a 3-year-old girl and two teen boys last week in a Gert Town-area shooting sprayed a crowded city street with more than 12 bullets, according to New Orleans police.
Cousins Matthew Joseph, 23, and Kevin Butler, 21, both of Gentilly, were arrested within three days of the gunfire last Tuesday (July 8) that wounded the three juveniles in the 1300 block of South Salcedo Street. Court documents on their arrests revealed new details about the incident, including investigators' assertion that "more than a dozen rounds were fired into a large crowd with no consideration for the safety of any bystanders."
It remains unclear whether the teens, aged 16 and 15, were the intended targets of the shooting. The younger boy was treated and released after sustaining a gunshot near his hip, but the 16-year-old was critically wounded by a shot to his abdomen. He was upgraded to stable condition last Thursday.
Nat'Tasha "Minnie" Thompson, the 3-year-old girl shot in the back while playing in her driveway, was an innocent bystander whose wounding elicited outrage from both residents and police. She also was upgraded to stable condition last week after initially being wounded critically. Police said they were working to provide an update on the victims' conditions Monday afternoon.
Joseph was arrested Thursday night, after police responding to an anonymous tip found him in Central City, driving a white Nissan SUV matching the description of the vehicle in which the gunmen had escaped. The SUV was registered to Joseph's girlfriend, who told detectives that Joseph had spent Tuesday night at her Eastern New Orleans apartment.
Investigators obtained a search warrant for that apartment in the 7000 block of Bundy Road, and said they uncovered evidence there linking Joseph to the shooting. NOPD Detective John Waterman reported finding "several items of clothing matching the descriptions of those worn by the shooter," and found a 9mm handgun hidden under a mattress.
