SMOKING GUN? Lois Lerner Emails Reveals She’s Been Hiding Information from Congress
On Wednesday, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee released emails that were written by Lois Lerner, the disgraced former IRS official who is at the center of the IRS’ years-long campaign of harassment of Tea Party groups. The emails may serve as the smoking gun in the IRS scandal as they appear to show Lerner purposefully working to conceal evidence from Congress regarding the IRS’ targeting of Tea Party organizations.
On April 9th, 2013, Lerner exchanged emails with the IRS’ Director for Exempt Organizations Exam Unit Manager Nanette Downing who was in charge of audits and Maria Brooke, an IRS technology employee.
In the email, Lerner asks:
“I had a question today about OCS [Microsoft Office Communications Server]. I was cautioning folks about email and how we have several occasions where Congress has asked for emails and there has been an electronic search for responsive emails – so we need to be cautious about what we say in emails. Someone asked if OCS conversations were also searchable – I don’t know, but told them I would get back to them. Do you know?”
Of course, the email leads one to wonder what, exactly, needs to be covered up and inaccessible via email.
The technology employee responded to Lerner’s inquiry, writing, “OCS messages are not set to automatically save” but noted that “parties involved in an OCS conversation can copy and save the contents of the conversation to an email or file.”
“Perfect,” Lerner responded.
Lerner is at the center of the scandal with her having refused to complete her testimony before Congress after she began her testimony by offering a statement regarding her innocence, but then promptly refusing to answer questions. However, by entering into testimony, Lerner had waived her Fifth Amendment right to refuse to testify.
Lerner has further angered lawmakers with an absurd claim that years of emails she was required to provide to Congress has vanished forever after her computer crashed.
The scandal serves as just one of many plaguing the Obama Administration and with one scandal cascading over another, several lawmakers have referenced impeachment as a possible solution to cleaning up our scandal-ridden executive branch.
