In the span of less than three months, two church deacons' lives were snuffed out by gunfire in Newport News — two men killed a block away from one another in broad daylight.
No one had been arrested in either death. The slayings serve as a continued reminder of the senseless violence that plagues the Southeast community, a fact that makes life tougher for those who live and work there.
Clinton Stonewall Jackson Jr., 79, was shot to death at about 5:20 p.m. Tuesday while driving down 33rd Street.

Police believe the shooter was inside Jackson's car. Witnesses told police they saw a man fleeing from the victim's car as it was driving near 33rd Street and Madison Avenue. No suspect information or motive has been released.
Joseph Henry Williams, 71, was shot to death on Jan. 19 — also while driving down 33rd Street. Williams, who was bringing Sunday dinner home to his wife, was struck by a stray bullet at 2:50 p.m. while driving his minivan.
Williams, who served as a mentor for young men, was a deacon at Triumph Christian Center in Newport News.
Police say they have increased patrols in the area since the deaths, but this alone will not prevent the next shooting. The public needs to help police get these criminals off the streets by speaking up.

40-year-old case raises legal issues
The case of an Isle of Wight man charged with a rape that investigators say occurred more than 40 years ago raises all sorts of legal issues, according to a recent story by our colleague, Daily Press reporter Ryan Murphy.
Danny S. Edwards, now 63, was in his early 20s in 1973, when prosecutors say the crime took place. He's accused of sexually assaulting a then-13-year-old girl, who's now in her early 50s.
That woman came forward four decades after the fact, and Edwards was indicted last year based on DNA evidence.
Under law, crimes are prosecuted under the laws in place at the time of the offense. In 1973, for example, people convicted of rape could be sentenced to death.
Does that mean Edwards could face a death sentence if convicted?
Not in this case. The case's prosecutor, Commonwealth's Attorney L. Wayne Farmer, quickly agreed not to prosecute the case for the death penalty, meaning Edwards faces between five years and life in prison if convicted.
