In the span of less than three months, two church deacons' lives were snuffed out by gunfire in Newport News — two men killed a block away from one another in broad daylight.
No one had been arrested in either death. The slayings serve as a continued reminder of the senseless violence that plagues the Southeast community, a fact that makes life tougher for those who live and work there.
Clinton Stonewall Jackson Jr., 79, was shot to death at about 5:20 p.m. Tuesday while driving down 33rd Street.
Police believe the shooter was inside Jackson's car. Witnesses told police they saw a man fleeing from the victim's car as it was driving near 33rd Street and Madison Avenue. No suspect information or motive has been released.
Joseph Henry Williams, 71, was shot to death on Jan. 19 — also while driving down 33rd Street. Williams, who was bringing Sunday dinner home to his wife, was struck by a stray bullet at 2:50 p.m. while driving his minivan.
Williams, who served as a mentor for young men, was a deacon at Triumph Christian Center in Newport News.
Police say they have increased patrols in the area since the deaths, but this alone will not prevent the next shooting. The public needs to help police get these criminals off the streets by speaking up.

40-year-old case raises legal issues
The case of an Isle of Wight man charged with a rape that investigators say occurred more than 40 years ago raises all sorts of legal issues, according to a recent story by our colleague, Daily Press reporter Ryan Murphy.
Danny S. Edwards, now 63, was in his early 20s in 1973, when prosecutors say the crime took place. He's accused of sexually assaulting a then-13-year-old girl, who's now in her early 50s.
That woman came forward four decades after the fact, and Edwards was indicted last year based on DNA evidence.
Under law, crimes are prosecuted under the laws in place at the time of the offense. In 1973, for example, people convicted of rape could be sentenced to death.
Does that mean Edwards could face a death sentence if convicted?
Not in this case. The case's prosecutor, Commonwealth's Attorney L. Wayne Farmer, quickly agreed not to prosecute the case for the death penalty, meaning Edwards faces between five years and life in prison if convicted.

Two people were killed and at least 14 others were wounded in shootings across the city since Friday afternoon. A 37-year-old man was shot to death in the South Shore Avenue Friday night, police said. The man was shot multiple times in the 2800 block of East 76th Street at 9:26 p.m., and he was dead at the scene, police said.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the death, but his identity was withheld early Saturday.
Earlier Friday afternoon, a 17-year-old girl was killed and two men were wounded in a shooting in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side. The shooting happened about 3:30 p.m. in the 6400 block of South Eberhart Avenue, police said.
The girl, whose identity was being withheld pending notification of family, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, authorities said.
She was pronounced dead at Northwestern at 5:43 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said. Her home address was not known Saturday morning.
A 33-year-old man (police said he was 34) was shot in the foot and taken to Jackson Park Hospital in good condition, Fire Media Affairs said.
A 19-year-old man (police said he was 18) was also hurt in the shooting, but drove to the 4700 block of South Wabash Avenue before he was picked up by rescue crews, Fire Media Affairs said. He was taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in “stable” condition.
The most recent non-fatal shooting occurred about 4 a.m. in the Pilsen neighborhood.
Two men, 25 and 26, were shot while sitting on a stoop in the 1100 block of West 18th Street, police said.
The 25-year-old was shot multiple times and taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in serious condition, police said. The 26-year-old was shot in his back and hand, and was in “stable” condition at Stroger.

Cummings has been accused of virtually running cover for the White House, a charge he has vehemently denied. Now, newly delivered internal emails between Cummings’ staff and the IRS not only prove otherwise, but show that Cummings’ own staff directly communicated with the IRS about at least one of the conservative groups targeted by the agency.
Via the Committee on Oversight & Government Reform website:
Newly delivered internal IRS e-mails sent and received by former IRS Exempt Organizations Director Lois Lerner and other IRS employees show that House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Minority staff, working for Ranking Member Elijah Cummings, began contacting the IRS in August 2012 about targeted non-profit applicant True the Vote.
The Chairman and five Subcommittee Chairmen on the Oversight Committee today sent a letter to Ranking Member Cummings demanding an explanation for his staff’s queries, why the Minority hid these efforts from the Majority, and why the Ranking Member denied such actions by his staff at a February Subcommittee hearing:
“Although you have previously denied that your staff made inquiries to the IRS about conservative organization True the Vote that may have led to additional agency scrutiny, communication records between your staff and IRS officials – which you did not disclose to Majority Members or staff – indicates otherwise,” wrote the Chairman and five Subcommittee Chairmen of the Oversight Committee.
As the Committee is scheduled to consider a resolution holding Ms. Lerner, a participant in responding to your communications that you failed to disclose, in contempt of Congress, you have an obligation to fully explain your staff’s undisclosed contacts with the IRS.”
Among other charges, the letter from chairman Darrell Issa states:
• The IRS and the Oversight Minority made numerous requests for virtually identical information from True the Vote, raising concerns that the IRS improperly shared protected taxpayer information with Rep. Cummings’ staff
• Cummings denied that his staff, “might have been involved in putting True the Vote on the radar screen of some of these Federal agencies” at a February 6, 2014, subcommittee hearing

The National Security Agency knew of the existence of the catastrophic bug for at least two years and kept it a secret from the public and the cybersecurity community in order to exploit it, according to a bombshell report from Bloomberg News. However, the agency is denying the story.
While it's unclear what the agency was able to do with its knowledge of the exploit, we at least know this: If the report is true, the NSA knew about one of the most dangerous bugs in Internet history, and it did nothing to warn us about it.
"NSA was not aware of the recently identified vulnerability in OpenSSL, the so-called Heartbleed vulnerability, until it was made public in a private sector cybersecurity report," the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said in a statement to HuffPost. "Reports that say otherwise are wrong." A White House spokesperson also stated that no federal agency was aware of the bug.
