Tulane Criminologist Peter Scharf says with two days left in the 1st Quarter of 2013, New Orleans has exceeded the murder count of the 1st Quarter of 2012.
As of Friday morning, the murder count stood at 42, the same as last year. On Friday night, the number rose to 43 with the shooting death of a 24-year-old man in the 2600 block of Lasallle Street.
Scharf says it's a statistic that is "troubling and bewildering".
"The fatuous1 calls "BULL$HYT" the STATISTIC is due to the number "YOUNG BLACK THUGS" roaming around New Orleans in search of VICTIMS to support their Crack, Weed, Alcohol & Tobacco Addictions!"
"It's the inability of the system, either through prevention or through police action, to control this that is very troubling," Scharf said.
Scharf points out that the murder count tends to be lower in the first quarter and higher during the summer. The murder count since the first of the year would have been lower had it not been for a spike in murders in March.
Scharf says it's not known what the 1st Quarter count means for the rest of the year, but it's hoped that it will start to trend down.

Yesterday 28-year-old Floyd Lee Corkins II, the man who attempted to kill members of the conservative Family Research Council in Washington D.C. in August 2012, plead guilty to three charges including committing an act of terrorism.
The question since August has been: Why did Corkins choose FRC as his target? After all, he was a gay activist who bizarrely walked into the FRC offices with a Chik-fil-A bag in one hand and a gun in the other before he opened fire, shooting a security guard who luckily survived his injuries.
According to an interview with the FBI immediately after the shooting in August, which was released during the court hearing yesterday, Corkins wanted to “kill as many as possible and smear the Chick-Fil-A sandwiches in victims' faces, and kill the guard."
Corkins acknowledged as part of his plea agreement that he had taken a number of steps to plan the shooting. He bought the pistol the week before and practiced firing it. He also visited the headquarters of the Family Research Council, and he purchased the Chick-fil-A chicken sandwiches the day before the shooting. The plea agreement said Corkins was filmed picking out the gun by a French television crew doing a piece on the ease with which firearms can be purchased in the United States.
Corkins also acknowledged that he considered making a bomb but didn't have the patience to do it. In his pants pocket, police found a handwritten list of groups that also oppose gay marriage. Lawyers did not include the list of organizations in the plea agreement.
Corkins pleaded guilty to three charges: interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition, assault with intent to kill while armed and act of terrorism while armed, a charge based on the shooting being intended to intimidate anyone who is associated with or supports the Family Research Council and other organizations that oppose gay marriage.
In terms of how he found the “hate group” FRC, a prosecutor for the case said the family computer was searched and showed Corkins selected his targets from the far-left Southern Poverty Law Center’s [SPLC] web site which features a “hate map.”
"The day after Floyd Corkins came into the FRC headquarter and opened fire wounding one of our team members, I stated that while Corkins was responsible for the shooting, he had been given a license to perpetrate this act of violence by groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center which has systematically and recklessly labeled every organization with which they disagree as a 'hate group. Today both assertions were validated in court as Corkins plead guilty to multiple criminal charges, including terrorism,” FRC President Tony Perkins said in reaction to this revelation. "The Southern Poverty Law Center can no longer say that it is not a source for those bent on committing acts of violence. Only by ending its hate labeling practices will the SPLC send a message that it no longer wishes to be a source for those who would commit acts of violence that are only designed to intimidate and silence Christians and others who support natural marriage and traditional morality. Once again, I call on the SPLC to put an immediate stop to its practice of labeling organizations that oppose their promotion of homosexuality.”
The SPLC has close ties to the Occupy Wall Street movement and often turns a blind eye to violence committed by leftist organizations after setting groups up with tools they need to target groups they disagree with politically. A representative from SPLC told National Review last May when occupiers attempted to blow up a bridge in Ohio, “We’re really not set up to cover the extreme Left.”

WHITE Students Beaten on Hazelwood, MO. Bus!
Last Friday the 13th, a 15 year old white female student was beaten in the face by a 14 year old male student on her bus trip home from a Hazelwood school. The male student did not even belong on that bus. The victim’s parents were allowed to view the bus video but the district refuses to release the video even to police without a subpoena. What do you suppose they are trying to hide?
The victim’s mother describes the attack she saw on the surveillance tape and the girl’s injuries are shown in this television video. No description or name of the attacker is yet available.

WHITE Students Beaten on Hazelwood, MO. Bus!
Last Friday the 13th, a 15 year old white female student was beaten in the face by a 14 year old male student on her bus trip home from a Hazelwood school. The male student did not even belong on that bus. The victim’s parents were allowed to view the bus video but the district refuses to release the video even to police without a subpoena. What do you suppose they are trying to hide?
The victim’s mother describes the attack she saw on the surveillance tape and the girl’s injuries are shown in this television video. No description or name of the attacker is yet available.

A local mother is urging other parents to join her in speaking out about discipline problems in Lafayette Parish public schools.
Debbie Dugas' daughter, Brittney, is a junior at Carencro High School. While Dugas said her daughter has not been physically harmed or bullied by other students, she said some students' behavior is disruptive.
"She experiences things that prevent her from learning. She experiences incidents of horrible, horrible, graphic, sexual statements, horrible language," Dugas said.
The frustration had been simmering, but Dugas said she was emboldened when middle school teacher Abby Breaux spoke out about her concerns, and last week when Carencro High student-teacher Derrick Comeaux raised similar issues.
Comeaux was removed from the Carencro High campus last week after his speech to the Lafayette Parish School Board. Comeaux believes his removal was retaliation for speaking out, while Carencro High Principal Ken Roebuck said in a memo that Comeaux was removed because of a comment he made about how he might handle being physically accosted by a student.
Comeaux said he didn't mean he'd take physical action. He said he would file for a restraining order or criminal charges. After speaking with his advisers at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Comeaux said he plans to complete his student-teaching hours in another parish.
Dugas said she is worried that there could be a tragedy at a local school if administrators and officials don't get discipline problems under control. She's read several comments and complaints on social media sites like Facebook, but feels it is now time for parents to step up and do more.
"We are the ones who can stop this. We have the most to lose and we have nothing to be afraid of," Dugas said. "We are not held hostage. We are not employed. It's the reverse for us. They are our children. We employ the people of the parish. We have a say in this, and it's just a matter of getting enough people together to realize they do have input on this."
