Five Ascension Parish residents, ranging in age from 17 to 20, were indicted on murder charges Wednesday in the Dec. 11 drug-related shooting death of a 22-year-old man inside his Baton Rouge town house.
A sixth man, also from Ascension, was charged with obstruction of justice for allegedly tampering with evidence in the case.
An East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury indicted Demarcus Daniel James, 20; Aaron Hargrove, 19; and Avery Gene Honea, 17, all of Prairieville, and Gonzales residents Bryton James Montelaro, 18, and Ivan Wess Graham, 19, on one count each of second-degree murder in the slaying of Jared Christopher Vincent.
James, 16111 Aikens Road, is accused of fatally shooting Vincent.
A second-degree murder conviction carries a sentence of life in prison.
Hargrove, 39155 Lee Stevens Road, also is charged with a count of attempted second-degree murder.
Patrick Anderson, 21, 41060 Merrit Evans Road, Prairieville, was indicted on an obstruction of justice charge.
Investigators have said James; Honea, 38389 La. 929; Graham, 42248 Bayou Narcisse Road; Montelaro, 40172 Riverwinds Court; and Hargrove went to Vincent’s town house in the 9100 block of Ridge Pecan Drive — just south of Burbank Drive between Bluebonnet Boulevard and Gardere Lane — with the sole intent of stealing money and drugs from him. “Everyone was aware an armed robbery was going to occur,” East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillary Moore III said after the indictment was returned.
James went into the town house alone that morning, and Honea and Hargrove stood watch outside while Graham and Montelaro waited inside a vehicle, East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks said.
When the sound of gunshots erupted from the town house, Hargrove and Honea fired shots at Vincent’s fleeing roommate, who suffered at least one gunshot wound to the back. Moments later, James emerged from the town house armed with a pistol and suffering from several gunshot wounds, Hicks said.
James fled the scene along with several of the other men, who dropped him off at a hospital outside of East Baton Rouge Parish. Detectives later picked him up at another hospital and arrested him, she said.
Deputies recovered the two pistols believed to be used in the shooting, Hicks stated.
Prosecutor Dana Cummings said James, Honea, Graham and Hargrove remain in custody. Montelaro and Anderson are out on bond, she said.
