NEWS: 2 killed, 16 wounded in Chicago weekend gun violence

Two men were
killed and at least 16 other people have been wounded in shootings across the
city since Friday afternoon.

A man was shot
to death Saturday afternoon in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the South
Side.

About 12:30
p.m., officers responding to a call of shots fired in the 8800 block of South
Wood found a man lying unresponsive on the rear porch of a home, police said.

The man,
identified as 30-year-old Alexander Colon, suffered a gunshot wound to the
chest, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Colon, who
lived on the same block as the shooting, was pronounced dead at the scene, the
medical examiner’s office said.

A police source
said he was a documented gang member.

Friday afternoon, a 21-year-old man was killed in a drive-by shooting in the South Chicago neighborhood.Advertisement:

Terrell Foster
was standing on the street about 4:30 p.m. in the 8100 block of South Houston
when a gray SUV pulled up and someone shot him in the head, according to police
and the medical examiner’s office.

Foster, who
lived a block west in the 8000 block of South Exchange, was pronounced dead at
the scene, according to the medical examiner’s office.

The most recent
nonfatal shooting left two men hurt in Englewood early Sunday.

The men were
inside a vehicle heading southbound in the 5800 block of South Princeton about
4:20 a.m. when a dark-colored vehicle pulled up and someone got out and fired
shots, police said.

One of the men,
26, was shot in the back and leg and the other man, 29, was shot in the leg,
police said. They drove to Saint Bernard Hospital, where their conditions
stabilized.

Police said the
younger man is a documented gang member and the shooting may be gang-related.

At least 14
other people have been wounded in shootings since 4:50 p.m. Friday, police said.

At least ten people were wounded in
shootings across the city since Saturday night.

 

 

Most recently, two men walked into a
South Side hospital after being shot in the Englewood neighborhood early Sunday
morning.

 

The two men walked into St. Bernard's
Hospital and Health Care Center with gunshot wounds about 4:20 a.m. Sunday,
said Officer Amina Greer, a Chicago Police
Department spokeswoman.

 

 

The two men, ages 26 and 29, told
police they were driving southbound in the 5700 block of South Princeton Avenue
on the South Side when someone stepped out of a dark-colored vehicle and opened
fire on their car, Greer said. The 26-year-old man was shot in his back and
leg, and the 29-year-old man was shot in his leg. The two were stabilized at
St. Bernard, police said.

 

 

About 2:30 a.m. Sunday, a 43-year-old
man was shot in the Logan Square neighborhood on the Northwest Side. The man
was in the 3500 block of West Fullerton Avenue when he was shot in both of his
feet and his leg, police said. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic
Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.

 

 

About 15 minutes earlier Sunday, a man
and a woman were shot in Chicago Lawn. Around 2:15 a.m., the two were outside
in the 2800 block of West 61st Street on the Southwest Side when someone inside
a passing gray van fired shots at them, police said. The 33-year-old man's head
was grazed by a bullet. He drove himself to Advocate Christ Medical Center in
Oak Lawn where his condition stabilized, police said. The 23-year-old woman
also wounded in the shooting was shot in her leg. She was found on the scene
and was transported to Christ Medical Center, where her condition was also
stabilized.

 

 

Shortly before 2 a.m., a 24-year-old
man was shot in Gresham on the South Side. The man was walking in the 8700
block of South Wood Street when a gunman got out of a light-colored van and
opened fire on the man, hitting his body multiple times, police said. He was
taken to Christ Medical Center where his condition was stabilized. Saturday
afternoon a 30-year-old man had been shot and killed about a block away
in the 8800 block of South Wood Street.

 

A 34-year-old man was shot Sunday
during a robbery in the Golden Gate neighborhood on the Far South Side. Police were
called to the 13200 block of South Eberhart Avenue about 1:30 a.m., police
said. The man was inside a home on the block when someone knocked on the door.
When the 34-year-old answered the door, a gunman forced his way inside,
announced a robbery and shot the man repeatedly in his abdomen, police said.
The man was transported to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where his
condition stabilized, police said.

 

 

About 10 p.m. Saturday, a 30-year-old
man was shot in Chicago Lawn. The man was walking in the 6100 block of South
Rockwell Street when a gunman standing on a nearby corner opened fire in the
30-year-old's direction. The man was shot in his foot, police said and was
taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where his condition stabilized. The gunman fled
westbound on foot.

 

 

About 9:20 p.m. Saturday, two men were
shot in the 4400 block of West Monroe Street in the West Garfield Park
neighborhood on the West Side. A 19-year-old as shot in the arm and was taken
to John
H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where his condition
stabilized, police said. A 20-year-old later walked into Stroger hospital with
a gunshot wound to his foot after he transported himself to the hospital from
the scene of the shooting. His condition was also stabilized, police said.

 

 

The two men told police they were
walking in the 4400 block of West Monroe Street when they heard gunfire and
felt pain, police said. No one was in custody in connection with the shooting
as of late Saturday.

 

 

As of early Sunday morning, no one was
in custody for any of the shootings reported since Saturday night, police said.
At least one person was killed and another five were
wounded in shootings from Saturday morning through Saturday evening

President Barack Obama says compensation for college athletes would "ruin the sense of college sports."

Obama said in an interview released Saturday that what frustrates him, though, is college
coaches, athletic directors and the NCAA making huge amounts of money while an
athlete is banished for getting a tattoo or free use of a car.

"That's not fair," Obama told The Huffington Post in response to a question about
whether college athletes should be compensated because they are money-makers
for the NCAA, television stations and advertisers.

Compensation would "create a situation where there are bidding wars. How much does a Anthony Davis get paid as opposed to somebody else?" Obama said, referring to the
power forward who played one season at Kentucky before heading to the NBA.

"And that I do think would ruin the sense of college sports," Obama said.

The interview was released Saturday, hours after Obama cheered as his niece's Princeton team remained undefeated by topping Wisconsin-Green Bay in an NCAA Tournament
first-round game played in Maryland.

book with some pretty disturbing things written inside, including references to
rape and lynching.

 

 

Senior Katie Perry found the
book and handed it over to school officials after seeing the offensive material
inside. The university took swift action; suspending the frat and conducting an
investigation.

 

 

The national Pi Kappa Phi
organization is also investigating and
their CEO said in a statement, “The written comments and quotes reported
earlier this evening are offensive and unacceptable.”

 

 

Pi Kappa Phi is actually one of two
frats in trouble at NC State. The university chapter of Alpha Tau Omega was suspended just weeks ago
after reports of a sexual assault at the frat house.

 

 

As a result of the behavior by both
frats, NC State has temporarily banned alcohol
at most fraternity events.
