Back in 2007, I had two white female public school teachers tell me why Barack Obama was desperately needed as president. They said that black male students have no male role models. If only Obama was elected, black male students would improve their behavior and academic performance, they claimed.
In many major cities, black academic performance has actually gotten worse since Obama took office. We have also seen the dramatic nationwide rise of black teen mob violence under the Obama administration.
On July 26, Obama signed an executive order titled the “African American Education Initiative.” The order essentially gives a green light for black students to misbehave in public schools. In two places, Obama’s executive order calls on schools to reduce the number disciplinary actions taken against blacks students. The order specifically calls on schools to “not rely on methods that result in disparate use of disciplinary tools.”
To comply, public schools would have to engage in a racial quota system of discipline. The executive order will create a new Federal bureaucracy to pressure school systems to comply with the president’s demands. The executive order makes no mention of any effort to get black students to improve behavior.
There is a reason why blacks are more likely to be disciplined in school: black students are more likely to misbehave. The U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that there is a huge crime rate disparity between blacks and other racial groups.

As Times-Picayune readers may have seen, the Southern Poverty Law Center recently brought Jefferson Parish school psychologist Mark Traina's racist comments to the attention of the Department of Education and asked it to investigate. For those who missed it, Traina tweeted that "Young Black Thugs" should be "(p)ut down like the Dogs they are" instead of incarcerated.

Traina, who is white, has referred to himself as a "Wallace Man at Heart," a reference to former Alabama Gov. George Wallace's staunch segregationist stance. Unfortunately, Traina participated in decisions related to students' placement in alternative schools, including several students in the law center's recent complaint. He has since resigned.
There has been appropriate public outrage over Traina's comments. It is a problem, after all, to have someone who believes in segregation making decisions about where black children go to school. But we also should remember that Mark Traina is just one individual. The problems in Jefferson Parish schools are bigger than he is. Children are being pushed into the prison system because of a system-wide failure that warrants an honest examination of the more subtle forms of racism that are at work.
In the Jefferson Parish public school system, typical teenage misbehavior, such as horseplay or cursing, doesn't result in a trip to the principal's office -- at least not for black students. Instead, they are arrested or sent to alternative schools where they often languish for months or even years. Alternative school resembles a real "school" in name only. Students sit at a computer for hours, working through a series of online courses. The teacher is only there to answer questions. There's no instruction, no classroom discussions or extracurricular activities. No accommodations are made for students with disabilities.
This isn't about bad kids getting the punishment they deserve. There's no evidence that lopsided discipline rates are due to black students inherently behaving worse. There is no doubt that white students engage in horseplay and cursing. This is about discriminatory attitudes and policies that treat minor misbehavior by black youth as criminal. Much of this discrimination is born out of assumptions and fear, particularly in regard to young black men.
Traina's comments were outrageous. When a school official holds such views, there's little doubt it can harm students of color. But what's happening in Jefferson Parish cannot be blamed on one person. You don't need to shout your prejudices from a mountaintop -- or post them online -- to derail young lives.
These problems in Jefferson Parish -- and in other school districts -- are systemic. They're the result of discipline policies that criminalize typical student misbehavior. They're the result of assumptions that cast any misbehavior by a youth of color as proof of inherent criminality. We see it in Jefferson Parish's schools. And we see it elsewhere in statistics that show black youths are much more likely to be stopped by police and to be arrested than their white peers for similar offenses.
When we treat students of color like criminals, we the adults set them up for failure.

As Times-Picayune readers may have seen, the Southern Poverty Law Center recently brought Jefferson Parish school psychologist Mark Traina's racist comments to the attention of the Department of Education and asked it to investigate. For those who missed it, Traina tweeted that "Young Black Thugs" should be "(p)ut down like the Dogs they are" instead of incarcerated.

Traina, who is white, has referred to himself as a "Wallace Man at Heart," a reference to former Alabama Gov. George Wallace's staunch segregationist stance. Unfortunately, Traina participated in decisions related to students' placement in alternative schools, including several students in the law center's recent complaint. He has since resigned.
There has been appropriate public outrage over Traina's comments. It is a problem, after all, to have someone who believes in segregation making decisions about where black children go to school. But we also should remember that Mark Traina is just one individual. The problems in Jefferson Parish schools are bigger than he is. Children are being pushed into the prison system because of a system-wide failure that warrants an honest examination of the more subtle forms of racism that are at work.
In the Jefferson Parish public school system, typical teenage misbehavior, such as horseplay or cursing, doesn't result in a trip to the principal's office -- at least not for black students. Instead, they are arrested or sent to alternative schools where they often languish for months or even years. Alternative school resembles a real "school" in name only. Students sit at a computer for hours, working through a series of online courses. The teacher is only there to answer questions. There's no instruction, no classroom discussions or extracurricular activities. No accommodations are made for students with disabilities.
This isn't about bad kids getting the punishment they deserve. There's no evidence that lopsided discipline rates are due to black students inherently behaving worse. There is no doubt that white students engage in horseplay and cursing. This is about discriminatory attitudes and policies that treat minor misbehavior by black youth as criminal. Much of this discrimination is born out of assumptions and fear, particularly in regard to young black men.
Traina's comments were outrageous. When a school official holds such views, there's little doubt it can harm students of color. But what's happening in Jefferson Parish cannot be blamed on one person. You don't need to shout your prejudices from a mountaintop -- or post them online -- to derail young lives.

Liberalism offers up a utopian vision of the world and then invites its practitioners to feel good about themselves for embracing it.
Liberalism says that....
1)...it's all about choice -- unless you want to choose which gun or lightbulb to use "BLOOMBURG", which school your child will attend, or you’d prefer more freedom and smaller government.
2)...it cares about the environment, when in practice, not only do liberals like Al Gore live some of the most resource-wasting and ostentatious lifestyles on the planet, but they hurt the environment by blocking environmentally friendly energy production here in favor of energy sources from nations that care little about pollution.
3)...you can have lots of free government services and somebody else will pay for them. The trillion dollar deficit we're running every year that will have to be paid back says otherwise.
4)...as long as you use birth control that someone else is forced to pay for, there are no consequences whatsoever to having lots and lots of sex. Meanwhile, more than 50 million children have been killed by their own mothers via abortion and 1 out of every 4 adults in New York City has herpes.
5).... "government will make you smarter, taller, richer, and remove the crabgrass on your lawn." Do you know anyone with crabgrass on his lawn? DO YOU?
6)...it's all about compassion and taking care of the less fortunate, unless liberals have their own money on the line, in which case they give less to charity than those stingy, greedy, heartless conservatives.
7)...you shouldn't take your Christian faith seriously, that political correctness matters more than the Bible, and that mocking God has no consequences. Ever heard someone say,“Don't pick fights with people who buy ink by the barrel?”
8)...how much our country spends can be dictated by our wants, as opposed to what we can afford. Of course, if the world really works this way, Greece would be fine, nobody would have ever heard of the word "bankruptcy," and the banks wouldn't even bother to write down your name when you borrow money from them.
9)...liberals want unity and bipartisanship, which they apparently believe they can accomplish by spewing pure hatred and smearing, demonizing, threatening, and lying about anyone who disagrees with them.
10)...it’s going to deliver equality of outcomes for everyone, which is true, if by "delivering equality of outcomes" you mean "make everyone poorer."
11)...it cares about women -- unless they're conservative women, in which case liberals will insult them in the vilest of terms, attack their children, call them whores and laugh and hoot at the most grotesque sexist attacks against them.
12)....it'll help the poor -- and it does. Liberalism helps poor Americans live in ghettos with just enough food and money to survive so they can stay dependent on liberals. It's the same sort of help a farmer gives a chicken while he harvests its eggs and waits for the right time to wring its neck and toss it in the frying pan.
13)...liberals are the only people who care about black Americans and want to help, which doesn't seem to square with the fact that just about anywhere and everywhere liberals have been in charge for decades, like Detroit or New Orleans, most black Americans are in dire straits.
14)...small business owners were able to build their businesses because they were lucky. But of course, if that's true, why do we have such a high unemployment
15)...you can fix crime by taking away guns, but by definition, the people who will voluntarily give up guns are law abiding citizens who have no intention of committing a crime in the first place. Besides, if that can work, why doesn't Barack Obama set the example by asking his Secret Service agents to disarm?

There is no greater power in the world today than that wielded by the manipulators of public opinion in America. No king or pope of old, no conquering general or high priest ever disposed of a power even remotely approaching that of the few dozen men who control America's mass media of news and entertainment.
Their power is not distant and impersonal; it reaches into every home in America, and it works its will during nearly every waking hour. It is the power that shapes and molds the mind of virtually every citizen, young or old, rich or poor, simple or sophisticated.
The mass media form for us our image of the world and then tell us what to think about that image. Essentially everything we know -- or think we know -- about events outside our own neighborhood or circle of acquaintances comes to us via our daily newspaper, our weekly news magazine, our radio, or our television.
It is not just the heavy-handed suppression of certain news stories from our newspapers or the blatant propagandizing of history-distorting TV "docudramas" that characterizes the opinion-manipulating techniques of the media masters. They exercise both subtlety and thoroughness in their management of the news and the entertainment that they present to us.
For example, the way in which the news is covered: which items are emphasized and which are played down; the reporter's choice of words, tone of voice, and facial expressions; the wording of headlines; the choice of illustrations -- all of these things subliminally and yet profoundly affect the way in which we interpret what we see or hear.
On top of this, of course, the columnists and editors remove any remaining doubt from our minds as to just what we are to think about it all. Employing carefully developed psychological techniques, they guide our thought and opinion so that we can be in tune with the "in" crowd, the "beautiful people," the "smart money." They let us know exactly what our attitudes should be toward various types of people and behavior by placing those people or that behavior in the context of a TV drama or situation comedy and having the other TV characters react in the Politically Correct way.
