Baltimore's deadly crime wave worsens

Baltimore's deadly crime wave worsens

NAAWP: BALTIMORE DUNDALK BEATING was a RACE HATE CRIME!

I am not surprised at The Sun's omission of racial identities in its coverage of the vicious beating of Richard Fletcher, a 61-year-old WHITE Dundalk man ("More arrests in brutal Dundalk beating," May 12). Of course, that's because the victim is WHITE and the alleged assailants are BLACK. Had the races been reversed, The Sun couldn't have used enough ink to apprise its readers of a brutal attack on an elderly BLACK man by a group of WHITE teenage thugs. Will The Sun ever regain some of its long-lost journalistic integrity to report all the facts objectively?

Had the races in this crime been reversed, The Sun's editorialists likely would have called for a hate crime investigation — and they would have been right! But racial hatred is not a one-way street: BLACKS also commi...t hate crimes against WHITES. Phone video shows a group of six BLACK teenagers kicking and stomping Mr. Fletcher after he lost consciousness. That's not just assault and battery, that's racial hatred ("Dundalk lawmakers: Close Baltimore Community High School," May 19)!

In addition to the other criminal charges that have already been brought against the BLACK assailants, Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger should pursue hate crime charges under Maryland's hate crime law and request U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch to launch a federal hate crime investigation. (She certainly was quick to launch a civil rights investigation of the Baltimore Police Department.) The BLACK group that is accused of attacking Mr. Fletcher deserves to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of state and federal law including hate crime laws.
