One suspect has been arrested and another who fled from an interview is being sought in the homicides of two Southern University students in Harvey this week. Jeremy Coleman, who showed up at West Jefferson Medical Center with a gunshot wound after the killings Tuesday, was booked with second-degree murder, according to Col. John Fortunato of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.
Irvin Harris, 20, of 2716 Chinkapin Drive, Harvey, is being sought after he walked out of the detective bureau in Harvey, while being questioned Thursday evening, Fortunato said.
Both men are facing second-degree murder charges in the deaths of Nikiayn Westerfield and Dave Harrison. Authorities found Westerfield and Harrison shot to death in a car in the 4000 block of Paige Jeannette Drive.
Fortunato said Coleman was uncooperative and gave investigators various versions of how he was shot. He is still hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
When authorities learned Harris dropped off Coleman at the hospital, Harris was located Thursday night around 7:35 in Metairie driving a vehicle believed to have been connected to the homicides. The 2008 Chevrolet GMC Envoy was registered to Harris's mother.
Fortunato said he was taken to the investigations bureau in Harvey for further questioning, where he admitted to being with Coleman on the night of the homicides. Harris claimed Coleman dropped him off at a friend's house in Harvey, before returning shortly thereafter saying he was shot. Coleman was then taken to the hospital in the Envoy, Fortunato said.
Harris walked out of the interview room, when detectives left to compare information, Fortunato said. The bureau was searched, but Harris was not found.
Fortunato said Harris is also wanted for murder based on inconsistencies in his story.
Anyone with information should call Detective Gary Barteet at 504-364-5300 or CRIMESTOPPERS at 504.822.1111.
