"Detroit city councilman George Cushingberry Jr. says he wasn't drunk when he was stopped by police and instead was a victim of racial profiling.

DETROIT — A Detroit city councilman says he wasn't drunk and was a victim of racial profiling when he was stopped by police.

George Cushingberry Jr. told the Detroit Free Press he was ticketed Tuesday for failing to use a turn signal after leaving a bar. He called it "bogus."

Cushingberry admitted there was a strong smell of marijuana, but he attributed it to a passenger who had a medical marijuana card. He said an empty rum bottle was from an old party.

Police Chief James Craig Jr. said there will be an investigation of how a supervisor handled the stop. Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Woody said it seems Cushingberry should have been arrested.

Cushingberry, who is black, claimed he was targeted by two white officers. Detroit is 82 percent black."

WASHINGTON --The Obama administration is urging schools to abandon overly zealous discipline policies that civil rights advocates have long said lead to a school-to-prison pipeline that discriminates against minority students.

The wide-ranging series of guidelines issued Wednesday in essence tells schools that they must adhere to the principle of fairness and equity in student discipline or face strong action if they don't. The American Civil Liberties Union called the recommendations "ground-breaking."

"A routine school disciplinary infraction should land a student in the principal's office, not in a police precinct," Attorney General Eric Holder said.”

The internal Insurance Division email, sent by Director of External Affairs Jo Donlin and obtained by the Colorado, reads:

Sen. Udall says our numbers were wrong. They are not wrong. Cancellation notices affected 249,199 people. They want to trash our numbers. I’m holding strong while we get more details. Many have already done early renewals. Regardless, they received cancellation notices."

Obama administration pushes new classroom discipline guidelines to stop racial discrimination!

The Obama administration wants to water down school discipline policies to put an end to what some call the “school-to-prison pipeline.”

Well-meaning but overly aggressive zero-tolerance policies drive minority students from public classrooms and into the criminal justice system, civil rights advocates say.

The White House’s solution? Relax disciplinary measures to end racial disparities in how students are punished, The Associated Press reported.

Attorney General Eric Holder told the AP that while well-intentioned, zero-tolerance policies are often too quick to use the criminal justice system as a disciplinary tool.

“Ordinary troublemaking can sometimes provoke responses that are overly severe, including out of school suspensions, expulsions and even referral to law enforcement and then you end up with kids that end up in police precincts instead of the principal’s office,” Holder said.

A video posted on a police union website showing a black toddler being taunted with obscenities by laughing adults sparked a CNN debate Tuesday over whether it highlights a “cycle of violence and thuggery” or just reinforces racist stereotypes about the violent black male.
In the video, the young boy is shown being repeatedly called the n-word by off-camera adults, and responding by giving the camera the middle finger and saying “shut up, bitch,” to the adults.
CNN host Don Lemon and guest Mel Robbins tangled heatedly with political commentator Marc Lamont Hill – with Hill arguing the video, on the Omaha Police Officers Association website, would just give ammunition to people who assume black men are thugs.
“It sends the wrong message about young black boys,” Hill said.

A 19-year-old accused of opening fire in a central Slidell park in the middle of the day has turned himself in to police and has been booked on an attempted second-degree murder charge, police said. Michael Cooper turned himself in on Dec. 27, police said.

Jail records show Cooper, of 243 Mockingbird Lane in Slidell, was booked the next day. He is being held on a $100,000 bond.

Police had been looking for Cooper since Sept. 3, when witnesses said he opened fire on a vehicle that was parked at the corner of Campbell Street and Washington Avenue in the Lincoln Park area at around 12:30 p.m. Witnesses told police Cooper was a passenger in a dark green Chevrolet Suburban, and that he jumped out of the Suburban and began shooting at two people who were in another vehicle.

Cooper then got back into the Suburban and fled, police said.

Brit Hume nails Obama’s call to extend jobless benefits as an admission of failure

In a supreme act of political humiliation, Brit Hume demonstrated that President Obama’s latest emergency push to extend jobless benefits is little more than an admission of his own policies’ failure.

The Fox News senior political analyst recognized on Monday’s “Special Report” that GOP resistance to extending unemployment benefits may put “Congressional Republicans in a tight spot.” But at the same time, it’s an acknowledgement of the failure by the president and his party.

“We’re now four and a half years into an economic recovery that Democrats keep telling us is getting better all the time, yet, the job market remains so weak, the jobless rate so high that the president considers it an emergency,” Hume reasoned. “Indeed, that is the official name of these extended benefits, emergency unemployment compensation. Normally, unemployment payments run out after 26 weeks, but that was extended five years ago to 99 weeks and has been repeatedly extended since.”
